What are the differences between a mat and a reformer?

I mentioned earlier that there are different types of Pilates. The different exercises can be done on a
mat, or you will need to use a reformer. Let’s start with the mat.

Mats used for Pilates are similar to yoga mats. They may vary in thickness or length; the Pilates mats are
used for exercises and stretches centered on your body weight. Some of the exercises that can be done
on a Pilates mat, which you will be introduced to include the roll up, crab position, swan dive, seal, and
much more exciting Pilates.

On the other hand, a reformer is a support machine usually made from sturdy wood or metal. The main
difference between a Pilates reformer and the mat is this- the reformer involves the use of bars, springs,
cables, and pulleys.

At first glance, it may be difficult to figure out how a reformer works, no worries, that’s why you have an
instructor. Using the reformer is going to be quite a different experience compared to the use of mats
for Pilates.

While Pilates done on a mat is focused on your body weight, to perform the stretches, a reformer is
used to create a resistance that you must overcome. It is in the process of overcoming the resistance
that your muscles do work and become toned. So, basically, Pilates on a reformer targets particular
muscles in your body to make them firmer.

As a beginner, the amount of resistance you will encounter when using a reformer is dependent on the
springs used. Beginners start with lighter springs; eventually, as you develop endurance and strength,
more springs can be added to create higher resistance.

Pilates on a mat will help you become more flexible, loosen sore or tightened muscles, and increase
circulation.

A reformer can help you tone your muscles, develop endurance, improve the muscles in your lower
back, and get a trim body shape. The use of equipment such as springs and bars on a reformer can quicken the results from Pilates, which will be obvious as your body and health undergo positive
changes.

Now you know the differences. However, it is best if you tried both Pilates methods. Many instructors
develop a program that involves a few hours of the mat and reformer Pilates for complete development.
